Biogas Italy: 20 years of agricultural future, from skills to action

On the way back from Rome, after two intense days at “Biogas Italy 2026 – Terra Motrice”, filled with dialogue and discussion on biogas and agricultural biomethane in Italy, it is clear how increasingly fundamental this value chain is for the decarbonisation of the energy sector.

In such a complex geopolitical context, reducing dependence on foreign energy sources has become a key factor. Within this framework, agroenergy can play a leading role, as also highlighted by the speech delivered on Wednesday, March 19, by Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.

As for biomethane, based on the figures presented during the event, work has already started on 320 out of the 575 projects included in the ranking. Thanks to the extension granted, it will be possible to complete most of the remaining projects, increasing production from the current 600 million Smc/year to approximately 2.2 billion Smc/year.

As reiterated by the Minister, Italy’s target for 2030 remains 5.7 billion Smc/year, as set out in the PNIEC, which will require new support measures. The changes introduced by the recent ARERA Resolution reduce connection costs for producers and open the way to a redefinition of compression and metering cost allocation. These measures, together with the introduction of BiRemi stations, represent an initial form of support; however, they are not sufficient on their own to enable the development of new initiatives beyond DM2022. The definition of new mechanisms, aligned with national timelines, will therefore be essential to meet PNIEC targets.

These days of discussion with operators, institutions and industry stakeholders have confirmed how crucial it is to continue investing in innovation and development.
